Call it school pride – a discussion between a mother and her daughter leads to a blog entry about the oldest girl’s school in Singapore. Can you guess which school it is?
She is the oldest girl school in Singapore, and was founded in 1842 by Mrs Maria Dyer, who was a missionary.
Mrs Dyer was en route to another country and stopped over at Singapore. At that time, slaves girls were a common thing in Asian countries, especially amongst the Chinese. When Mrs Dyer reached Singapore, she was shocked to see girls being sold off like goods to wealthy families, who could treat the girls as they wished too. This includes abuse in many forms.
Hence, she decided to do something about this, and seek permission from the government to set up a boarding school for the girls. She hoped to prevent more girls from being physically and emotionally scarred from horrible ordeals with their master families.
