Gay World revisited

Posted by noelbynature

There was an early time when ‘Gay World’ was an event for the whole family… today, not so much. Join Times of My Life as he remembers a once-gay place in Geylang which was once one of the best indoor stadiums in Southeast Asia!

I’m surprised that there are still people not aware of the Gay World existence in Singapore. Of course Gay World is short for Gay World Amusement Park, one of the 3 main Amusement Parks in Singapore. You have probably read about my post on New World Amusement Park.

Gay World Amusement Park was originally known as Happy World Amusement Park in the 30s. Happy World was the last one to be built in 1936 after Great World (1932) and New World (1923).

Find out about the Gay World Amusement Park in Times of My Life.

Thank you very much for posting this. It brought back some great memories for me, even though I only first came to Singapore in 1995. In around 1996 or 1997 I recall reading in The Straits Times an advertisment for a basketball game, to be held at the Geylang Stadium. So, as a basketball fan, I took along my (then) Singaporean girlfriend, and we went along and watched the match between 2 local clubs. I remember thinking how impressed I was with the standard of the match. I also distinctly remember that stadium – being octagonal and open air, it was quite unlike anyhting I had come across before – especially compared to our old basketball stadiums here in Australia. Another great memory of that vicinity that I have is a reasonable size hawker centre, which was located north of the Geylang stadium. I used to go there with my 2 of my British friends – this would have been 1999 – every week to have stingray, rice and kang kong for $13.50. The stall we used to go to apparently had won numerous awards for their stingray sambal sauce – they had all of these newspaper write-ups in their stall window. But unfortunately the stall moved – they did give my friend the new address, but he lost it. It was somewhere along Boon Keng Road or Upper Boon Keng Road though. I wonder if anyone knows which one I’m talking about (?) Also, is this hawker centre still there, or has it also been demolished? (My bet would be on the latter).

  3. cheap nike Said,

I love your emphasis on the importance of interacting w/ consumers rather than “interrupting them.” Nothing I hate more than not being able to reach a company after I’ve given them MY hard-earned money. I’ve already started to implement CHANGES in my biz thanks to your inspiring book. Thanks!
