I Can Relate to This!

The Mosaic Playground

Do you remember the mosaic playgrounds with rubber tire swings and the merry-go-round that makes you giddy but you’ll never want to stop? And the sand pits where you try to dig a deep hole only to find a concrete bottom!

Playground of my time

Those where the kind of playgrounds I played in. Are you from my time too?

This playground can be found somewhere in the north of Singapore.

It’s hard to find such playgrounds in Singapore these days. But there’re still some around! Can you guess where the above playground is located? Yes! It’s still there!

Playgrounds back then were not so brightly coloured and they were almost like an art piece in the neighbourhood. Each playground has its unique creature, usually a dragon or some weird looking animal that’s made of concrete and decorated with mosaic tiles. Once you fall or bump onto any part of the playground, you’ll definitely be rewarded with a big red prize that’ll be stuck with you for a few days. Yes! It’s quite a painful experience I tell you! Guess that’s also the reason why these playgrounds are taken over by the more child-friendly design and materials.

Let me share three of such playgrounds I found…

The orange & green dragon

Kids “walking the dragon”!

And I did it too! I had a flash back of memories while I did the walk.

In another neighbourhood…

The orange & white dragon

There used to be a rubber-tire swing here!
But it’s gone…

An example of such swing…

taken at another playground couple years ago

A clock-house playground

The new playgrounds in the neighbourhood these days are colourful and have many features for children to play and roam around. It may be more fun and interactive, but I miss the rough sand and my mosaic playground.

The playground you find these days.
Not so artistically pleasing right?

Do you know of any other mosaic playgrounds? Share the location here and I’ll try to capture them before they’re gone. Or better still, share your shots with me. Just drop a line here. ^_^

There used to be one 'dragon' playground next to my block unfortunately it's been torn down and a new one without any sand pit taken over. Used to bring my 2 sons to play there and they love it much better than the present one which only have the slide, no more swing...
