The emergence of photography created an avenue of documentation that was previously unheard of – combining detail, memory and above all, a perfect image of a scene.  The Western world paid close attention to the Malays during their foray into the Malay Peninsula as it was considered quintessential in understanding the region.

Malays in Early Photography in Singapore and Malaya invites visitors to revel in the mastery of early photography as it endeavoured to capture the essence of the land and its people.  Be in awe of the immense skill it took to produce these extraordinary photographs amidst various limitations in technology and infrastructure.  Discover the lives and idyllic scenes of the Malay Peninsula through the eyes of the photographers who sought to capture such enduring images of beauty.

The selection of photographs and postcards dating from the 1860s to the 1930s offers a peek into the life of the Malays at the turn of the century and provides stunning visuals of the changing landscape and social fabric of this budding nation.
