On 10 October, I attended the opening reception for the inaugural Asia Pacific Breweries Foundation Signature Art Prize. This is a premier juried prize established by APB Foundation and the Singapore Art Museum. It awards triennially to artists whose works represent a significant development in contemporary art.

On display till 16 November 2008 at the Singapore Art Museum are works of the 10 finalists for this award.

Online voting for the public started awhile back and now you’re invited to view the artworks in person and cast your votes at SAM. You only have till 12 October to do that! Or you can also vote online at the Signature Art Prize website.

I was absorbing myself with the variety of artwork from around the world and here are the few which I like from the 10 finalists.

Take a closer look… can you see what these chairs are made of? The artist has been working with the motif of chairs, and with his current series of works with toy guns, he wants to address the relationship between power and violence.

I almost jumped when I saw this donkey in the room. You have to take a look at this! The work is very realistic.

And the artwork that got everyone’s eye wide opened was by a local artists, S. Chandrasekaran.

Bleeding Angel
The artists immersed one-half of his body in a metal vessel containing wine and bacteria (Acetobacter). The concoction produced a thin film over the encased side of his face and body. The artist’s body forms not only a kind of laboratory but a living sculpture.
On the encased side of the body, blood-like liquid was dripping from the “claws” of the metal vessel.

Have I attracted you to go take a look at the artwork already? Did I mention that voters for the People’s Choice Award stand a chance to win a Canon digital camera too?

I’ve voted. Have you?
