Stories from the Dragon Empire

Posted by Shirley Chew

The Oriental Dragon, a sacred symbol of might and power, was a symbol for Emperors in China years ago. With such pedigree, it is no wonder that the first stamp produced in China showcases the dragon design.

At the exhibition, the stamps which interest me in particular was the series commemorating the 1911 revolution. The highlight was a stamp depicting Chinese revolutionary and political leader often referred to as the Father of Modern China.

Next, I toured of the Cultural Revolution section where red was predominant as a theme to symbolise the spirit of the revolution in 1966.

There was a stamp in particular which reminds me of a scene in the play “Bai Mao Niu” which means “The White Haired Girl”. The girl suffered at the hands of an evil landlord, a fate which was shared by many peasants. Towards the end of the play, The Liberation Army of China rescued her from the clutches of the evil landlord.

All this and more China Stamp stories are now available at the Singapore Philatelic Museum till January 2009. What are you waiting for!
