While our supermarkets have their own house brands, we also once had a National brand of electrical appliances – except that it wasn’t really ‘national’, since it was a Japanese company, and the brand is now known as Panasonic. So while you can find Panasonic products in most shopping centres today, there are only a handful of places where you might find National products in Singapore. The National (heh) Museum of Singapore is one of them.

National products are on show at the National Museum as part of the exhibition Weapons of Mass Desire, which has been going on for some time now, and miel takes a visit to the exhibition here. The exhibition showcases mass-manufactured products used in Singapore in the post-war period, such as old cameras and vespas.

You might want to check out Victor’s old post about the National brand and how it once stood out in the Singapore skyline!
