Seen recently at Tiong Bahru Market – can you tell what kind of foodstuff are these?
a) Pressed fruit
b) Coloured bread
c) Coconut candy
If you answered ‘a’ or ‘b’, it means you probably aren’t old enough to know when Coconut Candy was first sold in large transparent glass jars, rather than sealed in plastic bags in the picture. These Indian treats are becoming increasingly rare nowadays, although you’d probably be able to find them in the eateries at Little India.
SGalf, who was a fan of these sweets in his childhood, found them on sale quite serendipitously at the Tiong Bahru Market.

This is actually not getting any rarer at all
You can still find them quite regularly, even in Indian restaurants. Maybe not in jars but in those packets, sure. I don’t like them though, far too sweet.
