white-hobbies3

Greetings everyone!

My name’s Yasin and I’m a member of local fixed gear bike crew – Crank Arm Steady. Why is it called “fixed gear”? Well, the bikes that we use are “fixed”, which means we can’t coast/stop pedaling. We have to keep on pedaling no matter what the situation is.

Originally found only in velodromes, the fixed gear bike or track bike somehow made its way to the streets. The whole scene sort of erupted with the influx of footages of bike messengers tearing the streets of NY and SF.

Anyways, back here in Singapore, the scene is certainly growing. The boys and girls would usually meet up after work on Friday evenings. We’d make our way to Haji Lane and gather there before heading out.

What started out as a hobby to many, cycling has become something serious to some. The more serious ones have even started training to increase endurance, speed and stamina.

The best part about cycling here in Singapore is the fact that we get to experience the sights and sounds that one tend to overlook. We’ve been lucky enough to bump into little “treasures” around the island. From obscure bike shops, to abandoned hostels right in the heart of town, to where the best food joints can be found in practically every part of Singapore.

And I honestly feel that we’ve not even scratched the surface of what the island has to offer. We’re always looking for new, unfamiliar routes to explore. It doesn’t do the island justice by just writing about it. You have to experience Singapore by cycling around it.

You’d be amazed at what you’ll encounter. Oh! Be prepared for a rude shock when you decide to get your bike out and cycle on the roads on the island. The typical Singaporean motorist has this “grudge” against cyclist. They’d try to kill you (I’m not joking here) if they see you on the roads. They’d try their very best to squeeze you as close as possible to kerb and try to knock you down. Ok, I’m exaggerating, but only a bit. Singaporean motorists are the rudest, most inconsiderate lot. But I’m sure that you are a sensible motorist. Right?

Well, I hope I’ve piqued your interest enough to make you start cycling. If you’re interested to join our weekly Friday evening rides or if you have any other enquiries, do drop an email to us at: crankamsteady@gmail.com
