Abacus Seeds

Posted by noelbynature

Ever heard of eating Abacus Seeds? No, they’re not what you think…

One of my favourites is a dish called Suan-pan-zi (算盘子) or Abacus Seeds (pictured above) which we got to enjoy last night at reunion dinner. This, if I am not mistaken is a Hakka dish. It is not easily available at the food centres in Singapore. I once bumped into an old friend at a food centre in Ang Mo Kio Ave 4. Apparently, she had made the trip all the way from Bedok to enjoy this dish. I know of another stall at the Shunfu food centre near my former working place in Jalan Pemimpin that sells this dish. Nevertheless, I assure you that those you find at the food centres are no match for my neighbour’s.

Find out more about this dish on Good Morning Yesterday.

  1. Nicholas Said,

It is indeed a Hakka dish called “wu de pan” which I think roughly translates to abacus seeds. It was a rare treat since it involved a lot of hard work mashing up the yam and flour. But the end result was DELICIOUS! My mum used to stir fry the “abacus seeds” with dried cuttlefish strips, mushrooms and minced pork. Few places serve this dish, except for places specialising in Hakka cuisine. There’s one, called Plum Village restaurant at Jalan Leban, in Upper Thomson. I recently saw a stall at Lavender Street, in a old-style kopitiam, in the same row as the Singapore Casket.
