Advertisements as signs of the times

Posted by noelbynature

Derek pulls out some advertisements from the 1960s, showing us what were the most desired products and services back then and the places (that no longer exist) that sell them.

The above ad sells the Cathay Hotel, boasting “a panoramic view of the city and harbour”:

Many people will remember the Cathay not just for its hotel and restaurant but also for its cinema. It was one of the tallest buildings in Singapore at the time and had views all over Singapore harbour. It also featured a shopping arcade, was air-conditioned and the rooms were advertised as having their own baths and telephones.

Today of course, you can’t even see much of the city on account of the many high-rise buildings that have risen in place, and also I doubt you can see the harbour as well. Cathay’s legacy as a cinema still lives on, however. Check out Derek’s post for more advertisements from the 1960s here.

  1. Seo Said,

That’s a cool ad. My dad’s best friend, a retiree, collects old posters of those ads that used to hang in coffee shops in the 60s.
