Angelia Poon: Half-way down the length of Joo Chiat Road, at the point where it meets the end of Dunman Road, was where the OCBC bank used to be. It occupied the ground floor of a three-storey corner building vaguely art décor in design and was in every respect an unremarkable bank save one–it had a vault for safe deposit boxes. My mother kept one such box for storing important family documents as well as pieces of gold and precious jewellery, heirlooms that were only given an airing on special occasions like Chinese New Year, and then immediately re-deposited for safe-keeping.
