I think it’s safe to say that in every era, the older generation will always have some difficulty  understanding the younger generation. Wasn’t life simpler then? should life be simpler (or be just as simple) now? Well to show you how different the world of our 18-year-olds are today, we can take a hint from the Beloit College’s Annual Mindset List, which “provides a look at the cultural touchstones that shape the lives of students entering college this fall” and was “originally created as a reminder to faculty to be aware of dated references, and quickly became a catalog of the rapidly changing worldview of each new generation”.

This year’s list charts the mindset of students graduating from US colleges in 2014 (being born in 1992), and while it is US-centric, some of the mindset changes are very relevant to Singaporeans today. For example:

2. Email is just too slow, and they seldom if ever use snail mail.

12. Clint Eastwood is better known as a sensitive director than as Dirty Harry.

18. Fergie is a pop singer, not a princess.

19. They never twisted the coiled handset wire aimlessly around their wrists while chatting on the phone.

27. Computers have never lacked a CD-ROM disk drive.

28. They’ve never recognized that pointing to their wrists was a request for the time of day.

58. Beethoven has always been a good name for a dog.

You can read the full list here. The list is quite American-centric, so how about setting up a Singapore-based one here? What other mindset changes are there in the average 18-year-old Singaporean youth of today? Leave your suggestions in the comments!
