You know how they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery? If so, Elvis should feel very flattered indeed, judging by the number of Elvis impersonators out there. Today, we might view Elvis impersonators as an entertainment oddity, but back in the sixties, impersonating a famous star might just be the way to get yourself talent-spotted…
How was impersonating someone else a claim to fame? Andy writes:
… was an acceptable trend and there was a following when these artistes performed. Fans screamed and clapped when they see their idols on stage impersonating Elvis, Cliff or any singer currently popular then.
It was also a way for singers to be talent spotted by nightclub owners, recording companies, entertainment producers and event organisers. In the 60s such professionals were few and far between but they had connections.
Andy even has a list of people who impersonated other singing stars back in the sixties. Besides Elvis, there were also Nat King Cole, Cliff Richards and Tom Jones impersonators who graced the stage. Check out who played who in the Singapore 60s Andy Pop Music Website.
