another great post by kinkonkid, this time focusing on artefacts from the Japanese Occupation – a receipt dated 2605?!

The receipt was for a Bicycle Licence and was issued on 24.3.05 by the Perak Police Chief under the Japanese Military Government. It is interesting to note that the date of the receipt, 24th March had the year counted as 2605, which was by reckoning of the Koki or Imperial calendar. This was equivalent to the Gregorian calendar 1945 or 20th year of Showa (昭和).

  1. Lam Chun See Said,

On Jan 7, 1989 I arrived in Tokyo to attend a 1-month course on Total Quality Control. It was a cold, grey and wet winter day. I realised when I turned on the tv that I had landed in Japan on a very significant day; it was the 1st day of the Heisei Era. Emperor Hirohito had died the day before. One news programme had interviews with youngsters who patronised video rental shops complaining of the lack of entertainment programmes on tv.
