Soft drinks are bad for you! But soft drinks also helped to build up the National Heart Centre. How so? You’ll have to read Victor’s about two companies that supplied aerated water in Singapore: Framroz and Phoenix.

Both these companies were started by Parsis, a small ethnic community in Singapore that originated from Persia (Iran) through India. The Parsis were in Singapore as early as 1829, and the John Little departmental store was also founded by a Parsi.

The Framroz Aerated Water Factory was founded in 1903 by Phirozshaw Manekji Framroz. Navroji R. Mistri, an engineer and manager at Framroz later branched out on his own and started Phoenix Aerated Waters in 1925. Mistri also eventually donated money to build a new wing at the Singapore General Hospital, which eventually became the National Heart Centre.
