Here’s an interesting pictorial account, particularly if you’re interested in heraldry and coats-of-arms. the___earthinc posted a visual history of the Malaysian coat of arms. Of special note is this particular coat of arms:

It looks very similar to the current coat of arms of Malaysia, but oh wait! Can you see a familiar motif?
That’s right, at the tip of the shield is the five stars and crescent moon, the emblem of Singapore. This particular coat of arms was used for a very short period of time, between 1963 and 1965. In the current coat of arms, the crescent moon and five stars are replaced by the Hibiscus flower, the symbol of the federation.
