Official Languages

Posted by Slow

Sometimes one comes across interesting snippets of information from the past that has links to the present. Here is an early piece of legislation relating to official languages:

Ordinance VII of 1872 on Pawnbrokers

Part II: Conduct of Pawnbrokers’ Business
7. A legible copy of such rates of profits in the english, Malay, Chinese, and Tamil languages shall be exposed by the Keeper of every Pawnbroker’s Shop in some convenient place in the shop, so as to be near to and visible to all comers.

Part III: Police Regulations
14. A signboard shall be exhibited by the Keeper of every Pawnbroker’s Shop at or on his Pawnshop, of such size and in such position as the Chief Police Officer may direct. Such signboard shall have printed thereon in the English, Malay, Chinese and Tamil languages in such manner as the Chief Police Officer may direct, the words “Pawnbroker’s Shop”.

I’m now wondering what the earliest law with a multilignual language requirement is and what language(s) are specified.
