Old GEC/SGE Traffic Light

Posted by siukei

More and more old GEC traffic lights in Singapore are being replaced by new ones. What a pity.

The first set of modern traffic light was introduced in Singapore in 1948. The then traffic light sets were manufactured by GEC England. In fact, GEC traffic lights were widely used in SE Asia in the 20th century, including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Brunei, Hong Kong and Macao. GEC suspended its traffic light business in around 1999, when the company changed its name to Marconi. Singapore is the only country in the world in which the old GEC traffic lights can be found currently. However, the Singapore Government has decided to remove these old traffic lights. What a pity that we will miss these traffic lights which have served the whole country and the Singaporeans for nearly 60 years.

The old GEC traffic lights in front of the Singapore National Museum have gone recently. I would have to say that the new traffic lights do not look at all right fitting in this historical character of the location that the old ones did.

  1. traffic man Said,

I also share the view that Singaporean Government should preserve a few old traffic lights, say in the museum or the traffic park.
