Dr. Tan Wee Kiat — retired NIE Associate Professor, avid philatelist, author/ co-author of several books — shares this snippet about Stamps and Politics:
Although Singapore separated and became a sovereign nation on Aug 9, 1965 the use of Malaysian stamps for Singapore mail continued till February 1967. I do not possess stamp covers dated Feb 1967 but do have Singapore-registered stamp covers with Malaysian stamps (of the Malaysian King, Prime Minister, etc) dated December 1966, which is a full 16 months after Singapore became independent.
Thus, while Singapore and Malaysia were ‘politically’ separate in August 1965, they were still ‘philatelically’ linked for many months after that. Nice-sounding phrase, isn’t it? (Politically-separate but philatellically-linked.)
