Singapore Samurai

Posted by muse

Otterman, one of our Yesterday.sg editors, recently blogged about the passing of Penrod Dean, an Australian POW from Changi Prison.

According to the informative newspaper article cited by Otterman, Penrod Dean wrote about his WWII experiences in a book called Singapore Samurai.

Here’s an excerpt of a review:
Dean and a fellow serviceman escaped from Changi POW camp in 1942. Neither man knew it at the time, but their adventures and tribulations were just beginning.

Intrigued? Make your way down to the Lee Kong Chian reference library or buy it from Singapore’s own Select Bookstore.

  1. Otterman Said,

Just now, while talking to Simon Goh from Changi Museum, I found out this 1998 book by Penrod Dean is out of print.

Select Books lists it in its directory but a phone call revealed they were out of stock – Simon was right.

So I hopped over to Amazon.com and found a buyer with a reasonable price and ordered a copy. I hope to get it in early April.

The Pasir Panjang guides will find it engaging reading!
