My talk on blogging at RSVP

Posted by Lam Chun See

Last Saturday, I gave a talk to a group of about 40 seniors at the Silver Infocomm Day at RSVP at Bishan Central. This event was jointly organized by RSVP, the Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme and IDA as part of the Active Ageing Festival.

Entitled, “Blogging today on yesterday.sg”, my talk lasted about 40 minutes.

The main aim was to encourage the seniors to take up blogging as a hobby. I shared with them my own experience and thrill in blogging about stuff of yesteryears. My friends from NHB, Cha Aun and Wei Chong assisted me in giving them a demonstration about how to join Yesterday.sg and share their stories online.

I was much encouraged by the enthusiasm and warm response of the listeners. A few of them came up to us after the talk to ask for advice on how to do ‘cool’ things like uploading their photos to Flickr and Photobucket, and sharing them with readers of Yesterday.sg. Cha Aun promised to assist them if they have any problems and queries. Of course, if you are a young reader, and your dad and mum asks you for advice on how to do these seemingly simple tasks, please do be patient and ‘hold their hands’. After all, they were patient when they taught you how to ride that bike or take those first steps on this earth.

I am hopeful that, with our explanations and the colourful handouts and instructions given out by NHB, the participants will be able to start blogging soon. I am sure, like me, you too look forward to some of the stories and photos that these blogger-wanabes will be sharing on Yesterday.sg soon.

I take this opportunity to thank Cha Aun and Wei Chong of NHB for their assistance. A special thanks to Dr Tan Wee Kiat who so generously gave out copies of his latest stamp-based book; “Horse-powered & Man-powered Transport: a philatelic excursion“, which he jointly wrote with two other Foyers (Friends of Yesterday.sg)

Somehow, older people tend to like to talk about the ‘old days’. The other day, a friend at church found out about my blog, and then he too started to reminisc about his kampong days when he used to catch fishes in the ponds around the Serangoon Garden area.

But trouble is many of them have a perception that blogging is very difficult and only for younger people.
