Last weekend, the Preservation of Monuments Board announced the inaugural recipients of the National Monuments Fund. The Our Lady of Lourdes Church at Ophir Road, Sri Mariamman Temple at South Bridge Road and the Hong San See Temple at Mohamed Sultan Road will receive a total of over $600,000 to fund urgent repairs.

The combined ages of these monuments exceed 400 years and these old buildings are in need of repairs: the Our Lady of Lourdes Church built in 1888 needs strengthening of the roof and belfry. The 192-year-old Sri Mariamman Temple needs better waterproofing to protect its frescoes, while funds to the 100-year-old Hong San See temple will go towards repairing the retaining wall behind the building.
You can read the collected news reports on the Preservation of Monuments Board’s blog. The National Monuments Fund has $5 million set aside for five years, disbursing funds at a rate of a million a year. This year’s unused funds will be rolled over to the next year.
