The heritage offerings by the museums sometimes overwhelms me, but still I find myself often missing out on events that I mean to attend or forgetting to highlight certain activities to friends. Last Friday, a solution was offered at the annual “Heritage in Education” seminar that the National Heritage Board conducts for Principals and Educators. I listened with great fascination when Tan Shin Min of Education and Outreach Division revealed the new NHB Heritage Activities Calendar.

They say, its specially designed for teachers, students and parents (there are drop down menus for different audience and event types) but anyone will find this useful. I like the simple and easy to remember URL – heritagecalendar.sg.

“It is a one-stop calendar featuring relevant heritage events, programmes and activities from an educational perspective. Through sharing, the calendar promotes awareness and encourages educators, students and parents to participate in the vast array of vibrant multicultural heritage activities in Singapore.”

At the top right of the calendar window lies a very helpful feature. Just click the “Subscribe to Calendar” and it will provide a variety of subscription methods: email, RSS, ICS (iCal or GCal) and a widget.

After I added the ics subscription to my Google Calendar, I found Thaipusam helpfully marked out – this festival is not listed in the Singapore Public Holidays calendar I earlier added since, of course, it isn’t a public holiday in Singapore.

Now that it has been added to my Google Calendar, it will be automatically updated when NHB adds events to the calendar. Click on any item to reveal more details, even contact information. I can see that this is going to be extremely helpful to both me and my friends. Nice!
