Next time you’re in the neighbourhood, check out the On The Record exhibition at the library @esplanade.
If your knowledge of Singapore’s popular music scene is limited to the bands of today (eg. Electrico, Serenaide, The Great Spy Experiment, etc etc), do check out the exhibition now on at the library@esplanade: “On The Record: Homegrown Bands from Then and Now”. See how Singapore’s English popular music scene has evolved from the 1960’s until today, and discover that in spite of the changing times and trends, our musicians are alike in “just wanting to make music”. And doing it well.
For example, on surface, Rita Chao and My Precious seem to have little in common, other than the fact that both are Singaporean musicians. They belong to different eras and perform different genres – Rita Chao being a 1960’s pop songstress and My Precious, a current hardcore/punk band. Yet, both are Singaporean musicians who have won fans here and abroad, touring as far as Japan.
