The Singapore Heritage Society is proud to invite you to our February talk:
Design for Sustainable Culture.
This presentation is about an architectural project by a team from NUS that, unknown to many of us, has won awards from UNESCO and major international magazines and groups for their innovative, beautiful and culturally sensitive design of Yuhu Elementary School and Community Centre in Lijiang, China.
In working on this project, the Singapore team studied local architecture, traditions, materials and technology, paying attention to environmental, social and building conservation issues. The design is recognised assignificant for addressing the key contemporary concern of sustainability- not just environmentally, but also socially and culturally. The project
offers an alternative to the construction of new buildings in a sensitivecultural site.
Our speaker, Mr Yeo Kang Shua, is a PhD candidate at NUS Architecture and was the Project Manager at Yuhu. He will illustrate his talk with stunning
photos of this project, some which will be mounted for display at the talk. A beautiful book documenting the project will also be on sale.
