In the sixties, when it was time to get textbooks for the new terms, other than hand-me-downs, or borrowing from relatives and friends (and in those days, the same books could be used for decades, so much that we were impressed by the teachers rattling out the page and even the paragraph), it was time to track down the bookshops.
I still could remember then that we would go to Bras Bash Road. The main one in town, its peak must be in the December season. We would hop from one shop to another looking for books. It was almost impossible to get all the books in one store.
What if we could not get our books at the row along Bras Basah Road?
Ah, there was another row along Tanjong Katong Road. I wonder what happened to all these bookshops? Some could have survived, or evolved.
