Life in Potong Pasir by Tan Peng Yong

Posted by Lam Chun See

This article provides a rare glimpse into the harshness of growing up in a kampong. The description of the difficulties faced by poor Singaporeans of the post war generation should be educational to our youths.

The article also lends a healthy contrast to the romantic portrayal of kampong days given by some of us in our articles about the fun of growing up in a kampong.

My family & I lived in Potong Pasir in the 50s to early 70s. We were poor and lived in a shanty-like house with no electricity & water supply. For lighting at night, we used hurricane lamps, and for water we had to shoulder-carry it in buckets from a common stand-pipe 1 km from home.
