Memories of Braddell Rise School

Posted by noelbynature

SINGAPORE – MONDAY MARCH 23 2009 ::: Blogger Kim Aii Chan recounts with Chun See on Good Morning Yesterday memories of the Braddell Rise School in the early 1960s. Everything, from teachers to toys, to the dreaded dental van gets shored up from their recollections about school days.

School Tuckshop

On entering the first stall sold kueh kueh and otak in banana leaves, then came the old Hainanese lady who sold cakes/biscuits, tea and coffee, then the drink stall of Fong Jie who kindly gave us cold water foc, the mee pok lady (her niece called Lily was in our class for some years), the Indian Mee siam stall then the sweet stall (our favourite)

Early years, when the mobile Dentist van came and we queued up for the nurses to check our teeth. The primary 1 classes were situated in the first block where we could see the arrival, then fear set in our little heads!

From their 60s recollections, how much of school has your school life changed today? I remember that when I went to school in the 80s, the dental van had become a dental bus…

As I recalled, each time I consulted the dental bus, it was scary. I do like the school principal Mrs. Huang, she was friendly but firm.
Mrs. Annie Ng was my form teacher, strict but produced good students.

@Nikki Lucas – Mrs Annie Ng, was she the one that calls naughty boys “you wick devil”?

She’s a good lady. Was my form teacher in Pri 6.

Annie Ng was no good teacher. Confiscated my limited edition chess set from japan in 1966 when I was in primary 3. When she returned it after my sister asked for it, there were 3 pieces missing. Probably gave it to her children as toys. Gave me a negative impression of teachers. 2 teachers I like are Miss Tan Tin Tin and Miss Heng. Mrs Huang was strict but a good principal.

  4. Nikki Lucas Said,

I wonder are all these teachers and principal are still alive. Anybody knows anything about that? I don’t think Annie Ng is around, perhaps Mrs.Huang might be around. Does anyone know about Mrs.Tan Lan Neo, she was a good teacher, she was my pr. 3 form teacher, and I like her. I did not like Mrs.Chew, she was not a very nice teacher. She made us write lines and collect the papers and went to the kachang puteh man in exchange papers for nuts for herself to eat. No wonder she is fat.
