The boy who lived in a convent

Posted by noelbynature

To spend one’s boyhood in a convent may sound like every hot-blooded male’s fantasy come true… unless your boyhood means your early childhood – around 6 years old! In the old days, some boy-kids spent their early childhood in the convent. Katong Gal’s grandfather was one such person.

Katong Gal writes:

My grandfather was sent away to boarding school when he was about 6 or 7 years old. Yes, all the way from Katong to the Victoria Street Convent (CHIJ Victoria Street). He did go home on the weekends, transported on an old rickshaw. I guess that was why he had to be a boarder – it would not be practical for him to go there and back every day.

My grandfather was not, of course, the only boy to go to the Convent for his early education.

Among the other boys who went to the convent was a prominent Singapore minister. Do you know who it is? The answer can be found in Katong Gal’s blog here.
