Recent talk about a David Marshall interview (ahem) brought back memories of my childhood. My family once visited a relative working in the Singapore embassy in Paris. As we were being given a brief tour of the office, I scampered off into David Marshall’s room. He was out of the country at the time, so it was unoccupied. Much to the horror of my family, I climbed onto his chair…

… In the process, I brushed against a bag of peanuts on his desk, causing a few nuts to fall on the floor.

By this time, my family had caught up with me and admonished me. Of course as a kid, I had no idea who David Marshall was, except that he seemed to be a very important man, and I had done a very bad thing. I meekly picked up the nuts and threw them into his bin.

That, I suppose, was the closest I ever got to him.
