The Singapore Stone

Posted by Abel

The Singapore stone is what i am posting about, it is a fragment of a stone which once stood on the mouth on the Singapore River, it was blow up by the British in 1843 which is obviously is on display on the National Museum of Singapore.

It was blown apart to clear and widen the passageway at the Singapore River mouth. I think they should not have blown it apart as it serves at an important part of our history. There were writings inscribed on it so who knows where it may have come from. I think the British were too rash in blowing it up, they should have at least transported the rock somewhere else, and luckily there was a small slab of it left. It was designated by the Museum as one of 11 “national treasures” in January 2006, and by the National Heritage Board as one of the top 12 artifacts held in the collections of its museums.

It was a good thing that they still had one fragment of the stone left so that generations to come can admire its beauty.
