Having had the good fortune of travelling to various cities in the US and even Europe, I have developed the habit of making a point to first familiarize myself with the city I visit by being acquainted with its history and culture. One of the best ways that I’ve found to do this, is to join tours organised by various parties and individuals.

So the irony was not lost on me when I realised that whilst I have had the priviledge of going on many such tours in other cities, I have not yet been on an “excursion” trip in Singapore for a very long time (the last was when I was 18 and we were bussed to the Basic Military Training Camp at Pulau Tekong for a National Education trip).

waronwheel_257x1882So when I heard of War On Wheels, I jumped at the opportunity to get reacquainted with one of the important periods of Singapore’s history all over again. As a history buff and a student, Singapore’s war history was always something I held close to my heart. I convinced my ever obliging husband that we should not, at all costs, miss this.

We were registered for the afternoon  session as we felt it would be more interesting (we have had little opportunity to visit Changi Chapel, Johore Battery and Battle Box). And what an “excursion” it turned out to be! While most of the information given at the tour were things we already knew from textbooks, the chance to revisit the knowledge and information as an adult was educational and amazing in all senses.

I always felt Singapore not only lacked a variety of tours that brought people closer not only to Singapore’s culture, but also our history, no matter how young a nation we were.War On Wheels is definitely a representation of the kind of tours that we can have.

If there was an event calendar for such tours and presentations, War On Wheels will definitely make it to that calendar as one of those “die die cannot miss” events.

Kudos to the WoW team for putting this altogether, and I must say, this should happen more often!!!
