When all-you-can-ride was on $4

Posted by noelbynature

Schoolkids nowadays can get an unlimited concession pass for their ex-link card which is valid for about a month. The “pass” is digitally encoded into the ez-link card and you can buy passed for the bus, train or both. Before the ez-lin system became widespread, students had to buy monthly bus stamps for the bus pass, which was usually issued to you on the first day of the school term. Compared to the $20something dollars a schoolkid pays for a monthly bus pass today, how much would you have to buy for unlimited bus rides in 1980?

bus-pass-1980Yes, the sign reads $9! But in the 70s it was just $4! Well, this according to Jerome:

Full freedom came with what we referred to as the “bus pass”, that with a monthly concession stamp which we purchased for $4 affixed to the designated spot on the pass, allowed us the freedom of the buses – unlimited travel! Then, we could do what we wanted. Hop on and off at will, and discover where we could go with the buses.

Join Jerome as he reminisces about public bus travel during his school years, from the time when there were 4 bus companies to the period when double decker buses first started to roam our streets in I’ve got a ticket to ride: Bus Passes and Endless Bus Journeys.
