Because of our size, it might be easy to think of Singapore as always having been a city-state – but this is not so. Singapore was granted city status on September 22, 1951 – just 60 years ago. Mok Ly Yng writes about the 60th anniversary of the city status of Singapore, and it is shared on Otterman’s blog.

When I was studying history in secondary school, we covered mainly events that happened in mainland Southeast Asia, and across the waters in Indonesia and the history of the Philippines remained largely a mystery to me. In fact, it was only a couple of years ago that we saw our first major exhibition of the Philippines in the form of Land of the Morning: Philippines and its People at the Asian Civilisations Museum.

Did anyone catch the Thaipusam celebrations this morning? Today (more accurately, since yesterday) Hindu devotees in Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore have gathered to celebrate Thaipusam, a feast dedicated to the Hindu god Murugan. It is a colourful sight, and most observers will probably remember it for the massive kavadis that devotees carry.

Jerome has some pictures of the Thaipusam celebration in Singapore this morning – you can check them out here.

As we look to the start of the decade of the twenty-teens, how about turning around and taking a look back at the world 50 years ago? The 1960s or Swinging Sixties were noted for social revolutions worldwide – for women, blacks and new and emerging nation-states – like Malaysia, and subsequently Singapore in 1963 and 1965 respectively.

Without a doubt, the internet has been this generation’s world-changing technological revolution, and there are young people hitting twenty that would not have known a world without the internet. Before the internet, however, a similar technological revolution took place with the introduction of the television.
